It’s no surprise that I’m a HUGE fan of first looks on a wedding day, but to have one on the Blue Ridge Parkway is an absolute YES! Cassandra and Jake love the mountains and couldn’t think of a better backdrop for their first moments together than along the Blue Ridge Parkway followed by portraits at Craggy Gardens.
Some fun facts about the Blue Ridge Parkway:
The Blue Ridge Parkway is 469 miles long
Features over 200 formal scenic overlooks
The parkway typically receives around 15 million annual visitors, the majority of which visit in summer and during the peak fall colors in autumn.
The parkway is America’s longest linear park, spanning some 469 miles between Cherokee, North Carolina and Waynesboro, Virgina.

Having the best people included in your wedding party is crucial to ensuring that your wedding day is fun, exciting, and stress-free. Your wedding party should consist of individuals who not only support and love you but also bring a sense of calm and joy to the celebration. From your maid of honor and best man to your bridesmaids and groomsmen, these are the friends and family members who will go above and beyond to make sure everything runs smoothly on your big day. Whether it’s dealing with last-minute details, keeping the energy high on the dance floor, or providing words of encouragement, having the right people in your wedding party can truly make a difference in creating a memorable and enjoyable wedding experience.
Cassandra and Jake picked the perfect way to have a first look, the perfect venue and the perfect people for their wedding party! I loved that Cassandra had her bridesmaids wear mix matched dresses — which seems to be very on trend lately. I love it when the groomsmen and bridesmaids help make the wedding day fun and exciting and go out of their way to be helpful to the married couple. Every wedding photographer loves it when they are able to have fun taking photos that make the wedding party photos.
We’ve all heard the saying that rain on your wedding day is good luck, something to remedy a stressful situation because no one wants to get married in the rain. Some people know about the chance of rain in advance and are able to make plans accordingly but sometimes in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina the weather can change pretty quickly and before you know it, we have storm clouds rolling in.
In my years of photographing weddings rain has never stopped me from having a good time and capturing beautiful moments! Thankfully for Cassandra and Jake the storm was passing through and with everyone checking their phones for a weather update it seemed that putting off the ceremony for twenty or so minutes was going to be our only obstacle with the ceremony still being held outdoors.
Cassandra and Jake chose to have ceremony in front of the large oak tree downhill from barn. With the help of the amazing Nikki with Carolina Love Events and the staff from the Blackberry Cove the guests were able to get from the barn to the ceremony unscathed.
Once the storm had passed it was definitely time for celebration and some gorgeous photos! After the wedding ceremony I like to give the couple some time to talk with their wedding party and family, congratulating them on officially being married. I really enjoy photographing during that short period, it’s a great chance to capture authentic candid moments with the bride and groom and family. We photographed family formals at the reception area with the gorgeous mountains serving as a gorgeous backdrop! Everyone was in high spirits now that the rain had passed and the sun was out, wedding guests were enjoying delicious drinks poured by Jacks 47 Mobile Bar!
First dances hold a special place in my heart on wedding days. For as long as I’ve been shooting weddings the first dance has been one of my favorite moments to photograph during a wedding day. I love the cute laughs and kisses the couple exchange during the dance, the true candidness of their love and first time being introduced as a married couple. I love incorporating the guests’ reactions in the photos and documenting this beautiful moment in different, creative ways. I loved, loved, loved how gorgeous Cassandra and Jake’s first dance turned out. With their close friends and family surrounding them, cheering them on being introduced as husband and wife for the first time, the rain evaporating off the tin roof under the sun adding a cool element to the photos.
Following their first dance Cassandra and Jake hosted their reception in the rustic barn, The Fields of Blackberry Cove’s reception space can hold up to 75 guests and has room for a buffet dinner service, cake and desserts, dancefloor and dining area. The rest of the reception was full of laughs and precious moments during the speeches, the shoe game, cake cutting followed by lots of dancing!
